Education

UNESCO’s vision is that education is the key to social and economic development.

Unesco works for a sustainable world, with just societies that value knowledge. It promotes a culture of peace, celebrates diversity and defends human rights, achieved by providing universal education.

ILIDP shares this view. It therefore promotes formal schooling and education.

In order to help improve the quality of formal education in Loita the project has developed a programme which is aimed as much at children as their parents.

If parents do not share the view of the necessity of education, it is difficult to send children to school and, what is more, to keep them at school.

To date the project has built 5 primary schools in the five Loita locations and has also built nurseries and adult literacy centres.

It helps local parents obtain essential learning materials such as text books, exercise books and other basic learning materials.

The ILDP educational programme encourages school leavers to become teachers in their local communities and thus alleviate a chronic shortage of teachers.

In Ilkerin itself the project has created a boarding facility for up to 8 pupils aimed at extra tuition and coaching for the examination classes.

Results range amongst the highest in the province.

A fund, raised and operated by the ILDP, benefits more than 250 college, secondary and primary boarding pupils from Loita. There are plans to sponsor 10 Loita boys and girls to attend university.

In 2006 a secondary school opened its doors.
